What conditions do you work with?

My focus is on Complex Trauma, including PTSD, Psychosis, Phobia, OCD, Addictions and the many ways it can affect your daily life: e.g. school, work, relationships, and sense of self. You may be experiencing flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories, hearing voices, or living with neurodivergent experiences. Perhaps you're navigating the impact of childhood trauma, sexual abuse, relationship or intimacy difficulties, anxiety, depression, migration, or racial trauma. Whatever has brought you here, my therapy offers you a space to understand how these experiences have shaped you and to begin moving towards healing with compassion, safety, and hope.

Trauma often occurs when an individual experiences a profound loss of power, control, or safety during a distressing, life-threatening, or overwhelming event. These experiences can disrupt a person's sense of security and leave lasting psychological, emotional, and physiological impacts. Trauma results when an event is encoded in the mind, the body, or both as an experience of violation, helplessness, or threat that has not been fully processed or integrated.

Traumatic experiences exist on a broad spectrum and may include natural disasters such as floods, bushfires, or earthquakes, as well as human-caused events including serious motor vehicle accidents, physical or sexual assault, domestic and family violence, childhood abuse or neglect, war, forced displacement, and medical trauma. While the nature of the event is significant, it is the individual's subjective experience and the impact on their nervous system that ultimately determines whether an event becomes traumatic.

What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that helps reduce the emotional distress associated with traumatic memories. My approach is informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Somatic Therapy, integrating ego state work and body-based awareness throughout the EMDR process.

While there is time for reflection and discussion, EMDR is often described as a "less talking" therapy. During the reprocessing phase, conversation is kept to a minimum, allowing your brain and nervous system to process traumatic experiences naturally. This creates space for healing to occur beyond words, helping distressing memories become less overwhelming while fostering a greater sense of safety, regulation, and connection with yourself.

How does EGO state therapy like IFS work?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) and other ego state therapies offer a compassionate, non-pathologising approach to understanding ourselves. Rather than seeing symptoms as something to be "fixed," IFS recognises that we all have different inner parts that have developed to help us cope, protect us, or carry the burdens of difficult experiences.

By getting to know these parts with curiosity and compassion, you can develop greater self-understanding, inner harmony, and a stronger sense of self. This approach is particularly effective for people living with complex trauma, where different parts may hold painful memories, protective strategies, or unmet needs.

When integrated with EMDR, an IFS-informed approach allows traumatic memories to be processed in a way that honours and appreciates the protective role of each part. This often creates a gentler, more collaborative healing process, supporting lasting change without overwhelming your nervous system.

What is Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy recognises that trauma is experienced not only in our thoughts and emotions, but also through our bodies and nervous system. When we experience overwhelming stress or trauma, our nervous system can become stuck in patterns of fight, flight, freeze, or collapse, leaving us feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or constantly on alert.

Somatic therapy helps you gently reconnect with your body's signals, increasing awareness, regulation, and a sense of safety. By supporting the nervous system to process and release these survival responses, healing can occur in a way that is both embodied and sustainable.

In my practice, somatic principles are woven throughout the EMDR process, helping you process traumatic experiences while staying connected to your body's natural capacity for healing and regulation.

What is psychosis?

Psychosis is a mental health experience involving changes in how a person perceives, interprets, or makes sense of reality. It can affect thoughts, perceptions, emotions, and behaviour, and may occur in a range of mental health, medical, trauma-related, and substance-related conditions.

According to a presentation by Dr. Dolores Malaspina, approximately 1 in 33 people may experience some degree of psychosis during their lifetime. Psychotic experiences can occur on a spectrum and do not necessarily mean that a person has schizophrenia or another chronic psychotic disorder.

What can psychosis look like?

Hallucinations involve sensory experiences without an identifiable external stimulus. These are often auditory, such as hearing voices, but can also involve visual, tactile, sensory, smell, or taste experiences.

Delusions are strongly held beliefs that may persist despite evidence to the contrary. They can include beliefs that someone is being watched or persecuted, that ordinary events have a special personal meaning, or that thoughts or actions are being controlled by others.

Changes in thinking or behaviour may include disorganised speech, difficulty following a conversation, unusual behaviour, agitation, withdrawal, or significant changes from a person's usual functioning.

A trauma-informed perspective

Psychotic experiences can be frightening and distressing, particularly when a person feels that others do not understand what they are experiencing. Trauma, chronic stress, dissociation, sleep disruption, substance use, and other factors can influence how unusual experiences develop or are experienced.

A trauma-informed approach does not require us to confirm or dismiss someone's experience. Instead, it creates space to understand what the person is experiencing, how it affects them, what it means to them, and what helps them feel safe and grounded.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing hallucinations, unusual beliefs, significant changes in behaviour, or difficulty distinguishing internal experiences from external reality, seeking an assessment from a qualified mental health or medical professional is important.

At Insight n Beyond, you are at the centre of your healing journey. My role, as your therapist is to provide a safe, supportive space, along with the guidance, knowledge, and therapeutic tools to help you reconnect with your own capacity for healing. Lasting change comes from within you.

I believe you are the expert in your own life. Even if your strengths and sense of self have become hidden beneath years of survival strategies, trauma, or difficult life experiences, they are still there.

Together, we will gently uncover what has been protecting you, honour the ways you have survived, and create new pathways towards the life you want to live. Our work is collaborative, helping you reconnect with your authentic self, restore a sense of safety, and move forward with greater confidence, choice, and wellbeing.

How is Trauma-focused Therapy different

Trauma-focused therapy is an approach that directly addresses the emotional, behavioral, sensory and cognitive effects of past attachment or other ruptures and traumatic events. Unlike general counselling, it does not require talking about the trauma and yet with very little verbal engagment it helps you safely process painful memories, regulate the nervous systems, and replace unhelpful beliefs, feelings of guilt or diminished safety—with balanced, factual thoughts.

All therapy used at Insight n Beyond is trauma-focused.

What is the difference between a Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Psychologist

"Counselling involves a safe and confidential collaboration between qualified practitioners and clients to promote mental health and wellbeing, enhance self-understanding, and resolve identified concerns." (A.C.A, 2026a)

"Psychotherapy focuses on the whole person, encompassing somatic, emotional, mental, cultural, relational, and spiritual aspects of health and well-being. It is a holistic and relational psychotherapeutic approach that addresses everyday concerns, mental health problems, and severe mental illness. In psychotherapy, mental illness and psychopathology are understood as disruptions to the developing self which have been caused by repetitive trauma of an interpersonal nature." (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia [P.A.C.F.A.], n.d.).

"Psychologists study individuals and groups to better understand how people, communities and societies function, and devise ways to empower them and help them thrive. We do this through our understanding of mental and biological functions that drive behaviour." (A.P.S., 2026a)

How long does therapy usually take?

The length of trauma-focused therapy is unique to each person and depends on your goals, individual needs, and the complexity of the experiences you are working through.

During our initial sessions, we complete intake and look at your history and develop a personalised treatment plan together.

During the second session, and sometimes over additional sessions if required, we focus on developing nervous system regulation skills and assessing your Window of Tolerance. This process helps determine your readiness for trauma reprocessing and ensures you have the internal resources and emotional stability needed to engage in the work safely and effectively. Trauma reprocessing will commence only when it is clinically appropriate and at a pace that supports your wellbeing.

We will regularly review your progress to ensure therapy continues to meet your needs.
